Math students win three gold medals

Students from six countries participated in International competition held in Brazil.

Young Mexicans are continuing to demonstrate a proficiency in mathematics.

Five students from the National Autonomous University (UNAM) returned home with medals — three of them gold — after a competition in Brazil last week.

The event was the eighth annual Ibero-American inter-university mathematics competition, held in Manaos, Brazil, in which 65 students from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Mexico participated.

Things went better for Mexico this year, said student Jorge Fernández Hidalgo, because the team outdid Brazil, a perennial gold medal winner.

Another student observed that the university’s Faculty of Sciences has begun offering competitions to prepare teams for such international events, and more and more students are beginning to take an interest in competing.

In addition to the gold medals, the Mexican team picked up a silver, a bronze and an honourable mention.

The next event for UNAM students will be the International Mathematics Competition in Bulgaria next summer.

Last month, secondary school students from Mexico won bronze medals and honourable mentions at the International Mathematics Competition in Thailand.
